Kooperation mit Gymnasium Klosterneuburg

im Sommersemester 2011 betreute Dr. Reinhard Eder / Institutsleiter für Chemie und Biologie eine sehr erfolgreiche Kooperation mit der 6. Klasse des Gymnasiums Klosterneuburg (Biologieunterricht im Schulversuch Internationationales Baccalaureat):

Microbiological and Chemical Analysis on fruit juices at Weinbauschule – a science project in IB Biology Higher Level (6B)

On the 25th of May and on the 1st of June 2011 our IB biology course went to the Weinbauschule for a science project.

The project was coordinated by HR Dr. Reinhard EDER who is teaching at the „Lehr- und Forschungszentrum für Wein- und Obstbau“ and our IB Biology teacher Prof. Bettina Rosner and IB Chemistry teacher Prof. Lina Neuner.

First we were introduced to our topic which was experimenting with apple juice. We were told to pair up into three groups and given each a different sort of apple juice which we then would need to go through the different stages to investigate.

Sterile filtration and cultivation of germs on agar plates

Our group was the first to filter our fruit juice. The awaiting Professor Eder asked us to wear rubber gloves and sterilise all our apparatus we would use by holding them near to the flame of the Bunsen burner. Then he taught us how to remove the filter from its cover and place it between the container and the stand. After having fastened the sterilised container onto the filter we poured 100 ml of our apple juice into the container and started the pump. To see if there was any difference, we stirred one of the 100ml of apple juice with our fingers to "add" some microbes. Normally, all of the juice gets pumped through the filter but since we didn't filter it we had to stop after ½ ran through the filter. As soon as we stopped the process we removed the container so that we could remove the filter and put it into the Petri dish which was filled with agar. The Petri dishes were then put into an incubator for a week. The two groups after us did everything the same but the filtered the juice before filling it into the container.

One week later, we met again and after we looked if a bacteria culture grew in our Petri dishes we got a guided tour by Professor Eder through a part of the Weinbauschule Klosterneuburg and further we were allowed to taste a vine like vine testers.
